Stainless Steel Welded Mesh and its Applications

Welded stainless steel mesh combines the corrosion resistance of stainless steel with the strength of welded joints and has numerous applications including;

  • bird and animal cages
  • rodent protection
  • louvre mesh and bird proofing
  • fox proof fences for chicken runs
  • reinforcing mesh
  • gutter guard mesh
  • tree guards
  • security fencing
  • vertical gardens
  • gabions

Bird aviaries – The use of stainless steel welded mesh in the construction of aviaries is the only way to prevent potentially fatal zinc poisoning of the birds, which occurs when they chew on galvanised wire mesh.

Animal enclosures and fences – What size wire and mesh should be used?

  • Pet rabbits and small birds – a 12.7mm square mesh of 1.20mm diameter wire
  • Large rodents and parakeets – 12.7mm square mesh of 1.6mm diameter wire
  • Cats and birds of prey – 25.4mm square mesh of 1.6mm diameter wire
  • For large dog fences and cages, a 50mm square mesh of 3mm diameter wire.

Vermin  and rodent protection – A 6.35mm square mesh of 0.8mm diameter wire is recommended.

Fox proof fences – When used as fox proof perimeter fencing around chicken runs, the fence will need to be at least 1.8m high, and extend beneath ground level for at least 0.5m. A 50.8mm square mesh of 2mm diameter wire is recommended.

Reinforcing mesh – Welded stainless steel mesh, used as reinforcement, is easy to handle, corrosion resistant, fire and heat resistant recyclable and has a higher strength to weight ratio than normal steel. It is also cost effective as it does not require replacing.

Vertical gardens – Also known as “green walls”, these are an excellent garden solution for inner suburban houses with  limited outdoor entertaining space, as they take up far less space than a conventional “horizontal” garden or potted plants.  Plants are grown on a vertical wire mesh and stainless steel is essential for corrosion resistance, and welded construction is important for strength as the plants grow and become heavier.

They are also very popular with architects on large scale projects.

Gabions – These wire crates filled with rocks, are mainly used for erosion control but can also be used for architectural effect. Obviously, the strength and corrosion resistance of welded stainless steel mesh are a great advantage.
