Perforated Sheets

Stainless Steel Perforated Sheets offer an unparalleled combination of long-term performance, minimal maintenance and strength, making them the ideal choice for both industrial and architectural applications.

They are manufactured by punching or perforating stainless steel sheets.

Common Applications

Perforated metal sheets are used extensively for both industrial and architectural applications:

  • Industry for sieving
  • Industry for protection & ventilation
  • Architecture for function and appearance both internally and externally including:
    • Energy saving benefits, sound control and lighting effects

We carry the two most common size sheets of 2,000mm x 1,000mm and 2,500mm x 1,250mm these sheets can be used in a variety of different applications. Typically, the large sheet sizes are used in architectural settings due to their height. All sheets can be easily cut along with being used in the fabrication industry for sieves and filters.
There are several factors that need to be considered when determining the pressure drop across the perforated sheet, these are:
  • The viscosity of the liquid that is passing the sheet
  • The flowrate of the liquid that is passing the sheet
  • The open area of the perforated sheet
The open area for perforated sheets depends on the hole shape and the arrangement (pitch). The open area is often lower than woven wires and ranges from 19 to 63%. These materials are used where the pressure drop is a secondary consideration, and the sieving/separation is the primary consideration.
The most common way of cutting the sheets is using laser cutting or high-pressure water cutting. These give a smooth clean finish that make it simple to add a supporting edge on the outside of the disc. 304 and 316 grades of stainless steel have very good Formability (8/10) and Weldability (8/10) meaning it is easy to use to make durable products.
Essentially, it’s the same sort of processes as the woven mesh except where it needs to keep its shape.  Examples of these are typically tea strainers or coffee filters that use small holes in sheets to separate solids from liquids. Perforated Sheet is referenced as a material to protect against embers in the Australian Standard AS 3959 Construction in a Bushfire Prone Area. To achieve the standard of 2.0mm opening, the open area is between 19 and 40% which makes its use as a window screen often impractical compared to products that have a much larger open area like our product Bushfire Mesh – TOUGH Shield (62% Open Area).
Because the sheet is one piece (and not multiple wires) it will hold its form. Due to the way the holes are punched, it will not have the same amount of Open Area. As the sheet is smooth, it will be easier to clean and the tolerances on the holes will be better than the wire. depending on your application, you can have perforated sheet from 0.4mm to 3.0mm thick. The thicker the sheet will result in a stronger perforated sheet. Because it is Stainless steel you will still get the same durability properties as wire mesh, including hardness, strength and corrosion resistance.
Holes are normally arranged in a set sequence to provide a certain characteristic. These can be in a variety of different layouts and the function of the sheet will determine the arrangements.  When deciding on the hole configuration you need to consider the size of the hole and the distance between the holes (pitch). We are then able to calculate the open area which will help you calculate the pressure drop. In most cases the holes are simply to allow the product to be separated from a liquid.
SSWM stock over 30 different sizes in hole, pitch and thickness across two different grades (304 & 316) with two standard sheet sizes. This means we have 45 different SKUs for you to find the right product for your application. Our products are “Mill Finish” which means they have not had any other surface treatment. This allows you to select the SKU you require and allow you to select the surface treatment that is right for your application.
These sheets can be used for a number of applications. Because of Stainless Steels unique properties, it can be used in many applications where it is exposed to different environments. It can be used inside & outside, within food processing equipment and at high & low temperatures. Because the product is a sheet, it can be easily fabricated into different shapes and will keep its dimensions.  The product is most commonly used to “hold” material and therefore acts like a filter or sieve. It is often used in an architectural setting where it comes into contact with the general public. Stainless Steel Perforated sheets are often used in applications where the product can be exposed to fire such as rubbish bins and bus shelters.
This is a flat sheet of stainless steel that has been punched with holes. The punching and stamping can be completed either on a “turret” or a “gantry” machine. The holes can come in many shapes or sizes and can be used for a number of applications. SSWM’s perforated sheet is made in Europe to the highest of European Standards. These standards include the German Standard DIN 24041 Perforated Plate Dimensions and the ISO standard ISO 7806 for industrial plate screens (perforations).
We have a datasheet for each product item, these include a to-scale image, specifications, dimensions and weights. These are found on the website in the far right column of the product tables. We also include a link to the relevant datasheet in all quotes, proformas and invoices.
