When selecting the Fixture & Fitting to ensure long asset life, you need to ensure that you avoid using different materials. Different or “Dissimilar” materials should be avoided as there is a potential these will impact on the mechanical integrity of your asset.
Using Stainless Steel with carbon steel in wet a environment may result in a phenomena called “Galvanic Corrosion”, where the carbons steel will corrode due to being physically (& electrically) connected to the Stainless steel due to its position in the galvanic series of metals.
At SSWM we carry a range of fixtures and fixings that are compatible with our products. Research has shown that combining 304 and 316 products and fixings will not increase the corrosion rate due to the galvanic series of metals. Where products are exposed to the environment then the product and fixing should be compatible to avoid general corrosion.
