Termites have large pincer (mandible) on their head that allow them to breakdown material and consume it. Termite resistant materials should be capable of withstanding termite attack without suffering any loss of function prior to the expected service life. Resistant materials include resistant sheet materials including mesh. The termite resistant material must be tested using termites to confirm that it will act as a barrier. Termite resistant materials available in the market include: A Stainless-Steel mesh woven from 0.18mm diameter wire with an aperture of 0.45mm x 0.45mm with properties of at least equivalent grade to 316 stainless steel.
It is important to know that not all termites are the same. They can be considered as Workers, Soldiers, Queens, and Kings. In addition to these there are different species throughout Australia
  • In the northern parts of Australia, the larger headed termites or Drywood Termites can’t pass through the following aperture:   0.66mm x 0.45mm
  • In the southern parts of Australia the smaller headed or subterranean Termites can’t pass through the following aperture: 0.45mm x 0.45mm
It is a physical barrier that prevents termites from passing from the ground, where they live, to timber structures that they eat. There are two different types of termites in Australia according to the CSIRO and they live in different parts of Australia. The larger (head) termites live above the tropic of Capricorn while the smaller (head) termite live below the tropic of Capricorn. The size of the head of the Termite is important as this is the widest part and so any barrier must be small enough to prevent the termite’s head from passing. The size of the head is measured in Width and Height.
The requirements are for Class 1 or 10 buildings where any part of the building that is designed to take a structural load (roof, ceiling, floor, stairways, ramps, wall framings members and braces) are subject to Termite Attack. Where a building’s structural load components are made from the following then the building is considered not to be susceptible to termite attack:
  • Stainless Steel, Steel, Aluminium or other metals
  • Concrete
  • Masonry
  • Fibre-reinforced cement
  • Timber – Naturally termite resistance
  • Timber – Preservative Treated
Termite mesh is specified by the Australian Building Construction Board (ABCB) within their National Construction Codes (NCC) so the risk of termite damage to buildings is minimised.  Termite infiltration in an area can have a disastrous effect on buildings making the buildings uninhabitable and unsafe. The costs to replace buildings that are affected by Termites can be many several millions of dollars, which in most cases building owners would not be able to afford.
