Balustrades are part of the Australian Standards 1170.1 for structural design. The ABCB NCC also references Balustrades. Designers, architects etc need to consider the type of build and then the appropriate part of the standards and codes. Balustrades are considered in the Standards as “Barriers”.
Yes, the design of the Balustrade (Barrier) is related to the building’s purpose. The Australian Standards looks at the occupancy of the building and then sets the respective standards. The occupancy category, headings and specific uses are:

B Offices and Work Areas Light access stairs, fixed platforms, walkways stairways and ladders and areas not subjected to overcrowding
C 1 / 2 Areas with Tables and fixed seating Areas with fixed seating adjacent to balustrade, restaurants & bars
C3 Areas without obstacles for moving people Stairs, landings, external balconies, edges of roof
C5 Areas subject to over crowding Theatres, cinemas, grandstands, bars, shopping malls
D Retail Areas All areas including public areas, banks,
F/G Vehicular Pedestrian areas in car parks, including stairs, landings ramps
SSWM supplies Stainless Steel Mesh that can be used as the inserts for the panels within the Balustrade.  We are not mechanical engineers and are unable to help you with your Balustrade design, but we can supply Stainless Steel wire mesh inserts that are functional and look great. We can provide you with technical information on the mesh and from there you are able to design the frames and fixings to comply with the relevant use.
SSWM can supply two grades of stainless steel for the use of insert panels in Balustrades:
  • Grade 304 is suitable for inside applications or in outside applications that are away from polluted or coastal locations.
  • Grade 316 is suitable for all outside applications, including splash zone, coastal locations, polluted areas and inland.
It is recommended that all stainless steel is washed regularly to avoid any grime from building up. The grime can contribute to a phenomenon called tea staining, which is an event that discolours the surface of the stainless steel. With regular cleaning the grime doesn’t build up and therefore the tea staining doesn’t occur.
You should be aware that when different metals are in contact with each other in a wet and salty environment, there is a potential for the aluminium to show signs of corrosion. This may be the formation of a white powder where the products are touching, and is known as dissimilar metal corrosion. This is a slow process, as both raw metals have natural oxide layers that slow the process down. To avoid this problem, it may be necessary to provide a coating on either or both materials to prevent the corrosion from occurring. This could be either painting or powder coating.
SSWM products come in a “Mill” finish, which is the baseline for cold-drawn stainless-steel wire. If you are looking for a higher finish, then we suggest that you talk with a metal polisher, such as an electroplater or metal passivation. They can polish the surface and take away the roughness, which gives Stainless Steel that mirror finish. If you are wanting a Stainless Steel Mesh inserts for a high traffic area that appearance is important, then we suggest you consider this.
When selecting the Stainless Steel mesh, make sure that you look at the photos and take note of the “crimping”. Crimping is the technique that is used to clamp the two wires together to stop them moving when impacted. SSWM have different products with different crimping so make sure you ask about the crimping before you place your order. Typically, larger wire and aperture mesh have crimped wire to ensure it remains intact.
Originally Stainless Steel woven mesh was designed for screening and filtering. Larger size mesh is used in the mining and quarrying industries where high tensile strength and high durability are critical for screen life.
Yes, SSWM Mesh is made to the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards for both the wire and its chemical composition along with the mechanical properties and the weaving of the Mesh. SSWM can supply a 10 cm x 10 cm sample so you can see the wire diameter, aperture and the wire locking mechanism (crimping).
We have a datasheet for each product item, these include a to-scale image, specifications, dimensions and weights. These are found on the website in the far right column of the product tables. We also include a link to the relevant datasheet in all quotes, proformas and invoices.

No. We only cut across the width of the roll once. To enable speed to market, we have all specifications in pre-cut 2 m rolls in 1245mm wide and 10m rolls in widths above 1550mm, which are ready to be dispatched upon order.
