Aviary & Bird Mesh

Stainless steel is the optimal solution for bird aviary and zoological mesh, available in welded mesh rolls and panels.

SSWM is a leading innovator in converting many products from galvanised to stainless steel and has developed specific welded mesh specifications for aviary and zoological use.

Using stainless steel welded mesh in aviary construction is widely regarded as the safest and superior alternative to galvanised mesh. Zinc from galvanised mesh can be ingested by animals when they lick or bite the mesh, leading to potentially fatal heavy metal poisoning.

SSWM Stocked Aviary & Bird Mesh Range

We have developed an extensive range of stainless steel welded rolls in 30m rolls of varying widths and welded panels in 2400x1200mm. Commonly installed for:

Please note: We supply bird aviary mesh only for bird aviaries and do not design aviaries.

Why Choose Stainless Steel Mesh?

Our stainless steel mesh products are made from high-grade materials that offer:

  • High tensile strength: Ensures animals stay in and visitors stay out.
  • Superior corrosion resistance: Ideal for urine spray and coastal environments.
  • Excellent material hardness: Prevents erosion and impact damage.
  • Easy to clean: Maintains its finish throughout the product’s life.
  • Pre-stretched: Keeps its shape upon installation.

Why is Stainless Steel safer than Galvanised Mesh?

Stainless Steel is a more expensive upfront option however over the lifetime of your aviary it can save your birds and also save you a lot of money, time and energy. While galvanised mesh is a cheaper option, it can pose a significant risk to birds, as chewing and licking on the mesh can lead to zinc poisoning, which can build up to potentially fatal heavy metal poisoning. Not only is it a dangerous choice for the birds, but it also does not withstand harsh environments as effectively as stainless steel.

This really depends on your application. Talk to us about what your needs are, and we can help you work through the best product for your application.
Stainless Steel is one of the most commonly recyclable materials in the world. 70% of the worlds Stainless Steel has been recycled and the current Stainless Steel being produced today is made from 95% recycled materials. Recycled Stainless Steel has a significantly lower footprint than primary steel, uses less energy and less CO2 emissions. Stainless Steel producers are moving towards more sustainable supply, which is great for the environment.
We often remind animal keepers that enclosures are also important to “keep things out”. This can include zoo visitors and other animals from enclosures and wild animals. In some cases, having enclosures with a smaller mesh aperture at ground level and a larger mesh aperture at viewing level is effective to provide an enclosure that is safe, secure and suitable for the public.  Where enclosures are close to the public then a Stainless-Steel mesh prevents fingers or other body parts getting through. The Stainless-Steel mesh can also be buried around the enclosure giving you the confidence that what you can’t see is in place and effective over time.
This is typically driven by the following:
  • The size of the bird
  • The strength of the bird
  • The “bite” of the bird
  • The risks of the bird
  • The activities of the enclosure (breeding etc)
By understanding the above 5 points, the animal keepers can select the most appropriate stainless steel mesh.
Public zoos are typically administered through State and Territory governments via Acts. These Acts make the zoos responsible for certain aspects of the operations. They receive funding from the government, donations, sponsorship and ticket sales. Zoos are required to manage their assets in line with best practices with asset life expected to last decades rather than years.  Stainless Steel is now becoming the material of choice for its long asset life in these environments. This means that Stainless Steel enclosures will meet all the functional specifications. This results in an environment the general public can feel safe and secure knowing that animals are being properly cared for.
Where Animals are on display to the public, it is important that they are seen in their best condition. The same can be said for their enclosures. Stainless steel bird aviary mesh will not corrode like other materials, and this ensures that the animals are seen in the best environment. Unsightly, corroded and dirty enclosures reflect a poorly maintained Zoo. Enclosures that are clean and shiny using Stainless Steel give the Zoo’s visitors the confidence that the animals are well cared for and in good health.
There are several reasons that smooth wire aviary mesh is important. They are:
  • Smooth wires are easier to clean, and this means less time for staff to be inside the enclosure and a shorter time for animals to be outside their enclosures
  • Smooth wires mean there is less opportunity for diseases to build up on the surface of the mesh. Diseases are easily transferred by contact and
  • Smooth wires mean there is no opportunity for birds to cut themselves
Stainless steel grades are resistant to many different chemicals. Urine is normally considered as urea, hence the name, which is derived from Amino Acids. Stainless Steel aviary mesh has good corrosion resistance to acids at the typical body temperature of animals (up to 40 degrees C).
Stainless steel is stable and will not breakdown with an asset life well over 500 years. The galvanised coating on the carbon steel mesh is designed to corrode and slowly break down. Animals can accelerate the breakdown of the materials by rubbing or chewing the mesh. The Galvanised product can breakdown and the zinc oxides can be ingested either via the lungs or the stomach, which can then lead to illnesses.
Stainless steel typically has a higher tensile strength and yield strength compared to carbon steel mesh. These are important considerations when designing animal enclosures. In all cases the breaking strength of Stainless-Steel wire used in mesh is higher than carbon steel for the same wire diameter. The density and therefore the weight of the mesh are similar so there will be no difference in the structural supports. If this is being used to replace carbon steel mesh, then there should be no changes to the design.
Stainless Steel alloys are a great material that can be used in many different applications in many different environments. Stainless Steel is corrosion resistant meaning it will not breakdown and rust like other materials. Stainless steel, which is Chromium rich, forms a protective coating that prevents rusting of the elements within the alloy. Different Stainless Steel grades can be selected to best suit the environment. For example, Stainless Steel mesh used in enclosures at Taronga Zoo is grade 316 to protect against the chlorine found in and around Sydney while most enclosures at Dubbo Zoo are grade 304 as the area is free from chlorine (salt spray).
Stainless Steel mesh is the preferred choice of mesh for animal enclosures as it has benefits over other materials including:
  • Asset life is longer
  • Wire Strength is stronger (based on the same diameter)
  • Chemically stable and will not break down its coating, and impact the animal’s health
  • Wire surface is smoother and is easier to clean
  • The smooth surface doesn’t build up with dirt and hold potential diseases
  • The look of the mesh lasts and lasts with regular cleaning
