Bright Annealed Guard Wire

Stainless Steel Guard Wire with a diameter of 2.50mm is installed with underground cables such as fibre optic cables to protect cables from lightening strikes and offers surge protection. Guard wire is also detectable and can be used as tracer wire. It is extremely durable and corrosion resistant and the optimum solution where asset life is critical.

Stainless steel is chosen for its corrosion resistance and durability. In contrast, non stainless materials require sacrificial anodes to prevent corrosion, which need regular monitoring and replacement. Using stainless steel eliminates this maintenance requirement, offering a more reliable and longer lasting solution.
Bright annealed (BA) refers to a surface finish achieved during the wire manufacturing process. It results in a smooth, matte appearance. This finish is suitable for guard wire applications, as the wire is buried.
The tensile strength of stainless steel wire can be increased through a process called cold working. This involves drawing the wire to reduce its diameter, which strengthens it, known as the tensile strength. While tensile strengths up to 1500 MPa are achievable, excessive cold working can make the wire brittle and prone to breaking
Grade 316 stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion in neutral pH soils. However, in highly acidic or contaminated environments, there is a risk that the wire may suffer from some form of pitting corrosion. Soil testing is recommended in areas with known contamination to ensure long-term performance.
Guard wire is connected to earthing points using non corrosive, conductive earthing straps. These connections allow stray electrical currents, whether from lightning or other sources, to be safely discharged into the ground. Earthing points should be installed at every active device (such as junctions, bends, or intersections), or at intervals of 500 meters, whichever is shorter.
Guard wire should be installed in one continuous length. SSWM’s guard wire comes in different lengths including spools of 500m and drums of 2000m. If joining is necessary it can be joined using connector sleeve, crimp sleeve, denso tape and PVC overwrap to maintain conductivity and integrity.
Guard wire acts as a passive protective barrier, installed above telecom and data cables in underground trenches and acts as an “earth”. As guard wire is earther it provides a low-resistance path for electrical discharge. When lightning strikes, it is more likely to hit the guard wire in preference to the cables, and the electrical current is safely diverted away to the earth point.
Guard wire is designed to be buried underground, so it must be both durable and corrosion resistant. The industry standard specification for Guard Wire is Grade 316 stainless steel, which offers good corrosion resistance including for soils where low levels of chlorides may be present. It also needs to have high tensile strength to withstand stresses such as not breaking while in service. The industry tensile strength for Guard wire is between 620MPa and 760 MPa.
Guard Wire is a cold drawn bright annealed wire that is used in the telecommunication industry for protecting Telecom & Data cables against lightning strike. The annealed wire is typically 2.5mm diameter and can be easily shaped to fit into trenches.   The guard wire is terminated at an earthing point so it can conduct the lighting away from the cables.
