Gabion Mesh

SSWM Gabions are durable, corrosion resistant and supplied in easy to assemble kits that support a range of versatile modular design options

Gabions are constructed with high strength stainless steel welded mesh panels, spirals and stiffeners designed to support the weight of various fill materials.

Also known as gabion baskets or gabion cages. They have an extensive use of applications and are often used in civil engineering, landscaping and architectural projects.

Common Applications

  • Residential Retaining Walls
  • Garden Walls
  • Noise Barriers
  • Seating
  • Planters

SSWM Stocked Gabion Mesh Modular Kits

We stock Gabion Mesh Modular Kits in two sizes:

State / Territory Requirements

Keep in mind that each state / territory have their own requirements on retaining wall heights before a permit is required, typically these are:

  • Australian Capital Territory: 40cm
  • Queensland: 100cm
  • New South Wales: 100cm
  • South Australia: 20cm
  • Tasmania: 100cm
  • Victoria: 100cm
  • Western Australia: 50cm

Please consult your local council prior to building a retaining wall.

Councils can provide some useful information on retaining walls. Below are a few of some important ones:
  • Distance above or below ground level
  • Distance from any boundary line, easement, sewer or water mains
  • Distance from any other retaining wall on the property
  • Location in relation to any heritage item and/or environmentally sensitive area
  • Not built on a flood control area and
  • Distance from any natural water body
Yes, but it is important that you consider the following points:
  • Council requirements for retaining walls
  • Stability of the ground
  • The locking mechanism between each Gabion cage
If you think your structure requires signoff by a Civil Engineer then it probably does.
In short, they will last a lifetime. Stainless steel grade 316 in typical applications will last around 720 years before they fail. This product is built to last and not built to pass. Depending on your application and strength requirements you can select Welded Wire panels made from different wire diameters. The larger diameter the stronger the panel. The tensile strength of stainless steel is very high meaning that it will not fail easily. The spiral binders and the stiffeners are also made from 316 grade stainless steel. They will retain a clean bright finish that looks smart in any setting.
They are the same as our Welded wire panels. They are made on an automatic welding machine that controls the welding and dimensions. Welding is achieved via a technique called Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) to deliver the required Weld Strength. The Weld strength is specified as a % of the Tensile strength of the Stainless steel and is tested by an independent Lab.
They can be very stable. There are a few important factors to consider her such as:
  • The ground that the Gabion Cage is being placed should be flat and firm. If the area that you are placing the Gabion Cage on is unstable then this will make your Barrier Wall unstable.
  • Placing the Gabion cage in a trench will lower the centre of gravity of the gabion cage, provide more friction between the gabion cage and the ground to stop it shifting and provide more rigidity to stop it from toppling over.
  • The type and dimension of the stones and rock. It is critical that the heavier stone is placed on the bottom of the cage when filling. The objective here is to keep the Gabion Cage’s centre of gravity as low as possible. As a rule the centre of gravity should be either at the 50% of the height or less to reduce the likely hood on the Gabion cage for toppling over.
  • Make sure that the height of the Gabion cages is no more than 2.5 times the width of the cage. This will ensure that the risk of toppling over is further reduced (in earthquake areas this should be lowered again).
  • Consider the traffic movement in the area. If there are vehicles that pass by the Gabion cage and these have the potential to collide and topple the Barrier Wall then a bollard or similar should be installed.
Typically, Gabion Cages are either square cubes or rectangular cubes. These shapes are designed to ensure that the stability of the Gabion Cage is assured and that the probability of the cage from toppling over is eliminated. The length and the width of the cage is very important to give the stability. Where cages are long, then the cage is broken down into different cells to improve structure and stability. Because Gabion Cages are made from Welded wire panels you are only limited by the dimensions of the panels. Our welded wire panels are 1.2m x 2.4m and our spiral binders are 1.2m long and so you can make several different size cages. You may need to check with your local council if you are building a retaining wall.
Gabions can be used as a retaining wall and their design works well. Retaining walls need to be able to allow water to drain from behind the wall and as the Gabions cages are loose stones filled into wire containers, they are very effective. Different States in Australia have different building permit requirements and it is best to check with your local council what the requirements are.
We use 316 Grade Stainless steel on all of our Gabion Cages and they are suitable for most applications. We can supply 2205 grade stainless steel for those areas in Tidal and Wet Zones. We use stainless steel because we know it will last.
Gabion Cages are used in many location both Commercially and Residentially. Commercially they are being used for erosion control of areas subject to tide, flood and cyclones. Residentially they are being used for retaining walls to add a different feel in the back yard
They are one of the simplest and easiest way of placing a significant structure in a location with minimal effort. The welded wire panels come with spiral binders and stiffeners in a flat pack that can be easily assembled. The stones and rocks can be collected from the local area or specialist stone can be brought in and placed in the location. The construction of these gabions can be done easily and the installer can move the empty cages around and determine the location required for the effect they are looking for. Once in position the stone and rock can be placed in the cage to create the texture required.
Gabion Cages are also known as Welded Wire Fabric Containers. They are typically welded wire panels that are held together by wire spiral binders and stiffeners that provide strength and form to the cage. These cages are then filled with stone and rock and then sealed to prevent any material being removed. Gabions can be used in the following applications:
  • Retaining Wall to hold back soil, sand and rock
  • Barrier Wall to separate different spaces
  • Seating Structures
  • Architectural Structure
