Sieving has traditionally been associated with the food industry. It was used to grade grain harvests centuries ago. Grains are sorted into different sizes to improve the processing of the grain. Grains once harvested can either be:
  • Unprocessed and sold as whole grains
  • Milled to produce grain flour
Grading of grains provides a consistent product that buyers can then use for their own processes. This improves the quality and productivity of the material being sieved.
Sieving can be used for any materials where sorting into different size fractions is required. It is important that the sieve material doesn’t contaminate the material being sieved. Therefore, the sieving material needs to be harder than the material being sieved. Selecting the right size opening is crucial to avoid problems with processing. Effective sieving depends on conditions such as humidity, product wetness, angle of repose, product size distribution, throughput, aperture size and open area. To overcome these challenges, the process may include air dryers, mechanical vibration and heating conveyors.
Sorting materials into size fractions helps improve the quality of the finished product. Grading allows the product to be sold at a higher price. Users specify the grade to reduce variation and improve overall quality or throughput. Size fractions affect surface area, which in turn influences:
  • The release of flavour
  • The cooking rate
Sieving is broadly considered to be the separation of materials in agriculture and food industries where size distribution is important. Equipment is designed with specific size fractions in mind. Sieving aperture sizes range between filtration and screening, typically from 0.1 mm (flour) to 10.0 mm (nuts).
Sieving can be completed with any material that has holes, including woven wire, welded wire and perforated sheets:
  • Woven wire: square and rectangular holes, small wire diameter, behaves like fabric, easy to cut and shape
  • Welded wire: Square and rectangular holes, larger wire diameter, behaves like a fixed screen
  • Perforated sheet: Holes can be round, square, or rectangular, produced with or without a border
Yes, open area impacts product throughput and operational efficiency:
  • Large open area may result in product passing through too quickly, causing buildup before the next process
  • Small open area restricts flow, potentially creating a backlog and blockage on the sieve
Yes, different materials have different size distributions. Sieving separates materials into two fractions: those that pass through (bottoms) and those that don’t (tops). Products may be processed and sieved multiple times. Apertures may change depending on raw material size variations. Users may purchase ungraded material and grade it themselves. Oversized material may be reprocessed, while undersized material may be downgraded and sold as seconds. Raw materials are often sorted into several sizes and directed to different production lines, including secondary sieving after crushing or grinding.
Bolting Cloth is used in the flour industry and has a higher open area for high-capacity sifting. Hollander Mesh uses two wire diameters for strength (larger wire) and open area (smaller wire), allowing good throughput. SSWM supplies these materials for specific applications.
SSWM has supplied woven, welded, and perforated sheets to various industries: Agriculture:
  • Sorting wheat using woven mesh
  • Sorting nuts using welded mesh
Food:
  • Sifting flour using bolting cloth
  • Pistachio nuts for Dubai chocolate using perforated sheet
  • Straining pasta from water using perforated sheet
Beverage Industry:
  • Coffee beans using woven mesh
  • Removing particulates from wine using Hollander mesh
SSWM can assist in identifying your sieve. If you provide a photo of the sieve with a ruler for scale, we may be able to identify it. Our database of mesh types and uses can help get your sieving operation back on track.
We have a datasheet for each product item, these include a to-scale image, specifications, dimensions and weights. These are found on the website in the far right column of the product tables. We also include a link to the relevant datasheet in all quotes, proformas and invoices.
