Stainless Steel Filter Mesh is typically used to separate one material from another. The small particles fall through the holes while the large material stays on top of the mesh. Mesh can be used to separate solids from solids and also separate solids from liquids and gases. At SSWM, we supply woven mesh that can be used in four main separation processes:
  1. Ultrafine Filtration – used for “purification” processes such as separating solids from the following streams: air, water and lubrication oils.
  2. Filtration – used for separation of solids from liquids.
  3. Sieving – used to separate solids from smaller size fractions from larger ones.
  4. Screening – Used to separate coarse solids.
Woven and welded meshes are used in very different applications and their uses are a function of their physical properties.
  • Woven Mesh is typically used in applications where there are dynamic loads, smaller apertures and thinner wires. These loads are generated by the separation process where materials are passed through the mesh and the large products are separated from the smaller particles or the medium.
  • Welded Mesh is typically used in applications where there are static loads, larger apertures, and larger wires. Because the wire rods are welded, they are best suited for these static loads. (In dynamic situations these welds may break resulting in larger apertures).
Filtration mesh is typically a woven mesh that is primarily used in the food & beverage and the chemical processing Industries. Filtration mesh is used differently for different industries:
  • Food & Beverage, it is used as part of the quality process of products. Ensuring the product is free from lumps or particulates will present a consistent product that reflects quality.
  • Chemical Processes, it is used as part of the chemical reaction / extraction process. It is used to deliver efficiency in production where products must be separated from different streams.
Filtration Mesh specifications are quite broad and depend on the application. In general, the users of filtration mesh need to consider the following:
  • The aperture of the mesh and the ability to recover the target particle size
  • The wire diameter of the mesh to ensure it is strong enough to capture the products.
  • The open area of the stainless steel mesh filter to ensure the flowrate through the mesh is considered (Pressure drop etc)
  • The type of weave to ensure fewer blockages
  • The material the mesh is made from to ensure it doesn’t contaminate the products at different operating conditions
  • The durability of the Mesh and how it is washed, cleaned and handled
We classify our Filtration Mesh as having an aperture greater than 0.10mm and less than 1.50mm.
Filtration Mesh has been developed over 100 years and there are different stainless steel mesh filters available for your application. The following are commonly used meshes:
Filtration Mesh is typically installed within a frame inside a machine. These machines have been designed to handle different flowrates and particle sizes. SSWM supplies Woven Mesh in a variety of different widths to meet filtration processes from 1245 mm to 2000mm.
Stainless Steel as a material has several important properties that make it ideal for filtration. As filtration is used in industries where quality is important and no contamination is essential For that reason, Stainless Steel is used because it provides:
  • Corrosion Resistance
  • High Tensile Strength
  • Easy Cleanability
Different stainless steel mesh filter applications have different requirements. The following are examples how the different application will determine the most appropriate grade to use:
  • For industries that are filtrating above 30 degree C with a highly chlorinated environments (desalination process) then a Duplex grade stainless steel like 2507 may be selected as it has excellent corrosion resistance in this application.
  • For industries that are operating above 10 degrees C with a mild chlorine environment (eg, water treatment plant) then an austenitic grade stainless steel like 316 may be selected.
  • For the food industry that operates above 10 degrees C with a low chlorine environment than an austenitic grade stainless steel like 304 may be selected.
While the mesh is simply woven, there are techniques that are used in the manufacturing to ensure the quality of the weave.
  • Plain Weave (PW) – Wires pass over & under single (1) alternative wires to make a simple square grid pattern
  • Twill Weave (TW) – Wires pass over & under two (2) alternative wires to make a denser mesh
  • Inter Crimp (IC) – Wires are crimped to create a grip between the cross wires (multiple crimp)
  • Lock Crimp (LC) – Wires are crimpled at each intersection with a single crimp
Using different techniques can improve some of the physical properties of the mesh like rigidity.
At SSWM we supply a variety of different grades of  stainless steel mesh filters. We stock the most common commercial grades of stainless steel (grades 304 and 316) and are able to order filtration mesh in 2205 and 2507 grades. If you are working on a desalination plant, power station or an offshore structure and need a specialist grade of Stainless steel then call us on 1300 304 316 to discuss your filtration needs.
We have a datasheet for each product item, these include a to-scale image, specifications, dimensions and weights. These are found on the website in the far right column of the product tables. We also include a link to the relevant datasheet in all quotes, proformas and invoices.
