SSWM supplies Stainless Steel that meets the Chemical Composition of BS 6744 and the Mechanical and Dimensional properties of AS 4671.  We are able to supply several different grades for different applications for your environment.
Yes. The current Australian Standard for Steel Reinforcing Materials AS/NZS 4671:2001 states Stainless Steel as a material is out of scope but this doesn’t mean it cannot be used. The latest Australian Standard for Maritime Structures, Guidelines for the design of maritime structures AS 4997 does reference Stainless Steel as a suitable material to be used and references the British Standards BS6744 when it comes to reinforced concrete.  There are other Standards (ASTM A1022) that support the use of different grades for different applications.
It will help. When using Stainless Steel in reinforced concrete it will significantly improve the asset life, lower maintenance costs and use less concrete. All of these factors have a positive effect on the environment by:
  • Reduce the total weight of the building and therefore the footing size
  • Reduce the amount of lime required and therefore reduce the amount of energy and CO2 produced
  • Reduce the number of trucks on the road throughout the building supply chain
All of these initiatives are important and when selecting Stainless Steel as your reinforcement steel you are lowering emissions.
The cover thickness of concrete over carbon steel takes into consideration the following:
  • The porosity of the concrete
  • The chemistry of the concrete
  • The environment where the concrete will be installed
The thickness of the concrete cover is calculated by looking at the absorption rate of the moisture and gases through the concrete and the designed asset life. Because the Stainless Steel is not affected by the moisture and gases, a reduced thickness of cover is allowable. In all cases the industry guidelines show that more concrete cover is required in an environment where there is greater exposure to chlorine ions.
No. The Concrete Carbonation or the reabsorption of CO2 into concrete is not a corrosion agent for Stainless Steel. When the CO2 front reaches the steel reinforcement it can pass through. Reabsorption actually improves the strength of the concrete and this has been shown by inspecting ancient mortar on stone buildings.
No. Stainless Steel should be used where there is a known risk of corrosion. It may be used only in the areas within the corrosion zone that has been calculated for the asset life. If the asset is to last 100 years and the known chlorine concentration is X and the porosity of the concrete is Y then Stainless steel should be used within this area where concrete is used.
No. Because the stainless steel doesn’t produce an oxide and rust, therefore there are no internal forces formed inside the concrete. The concrete which is porous still allows moisture and gases to move through its structure but when it reaches the Stainless Steel, these pass by causing no corrosion.
As there are so many moving parts with so many different stakeholders involved it is very difficult to construct reinforced concrete. Because the above factors are hard to control, companies start to play around with different aspects of the build to optimise what they are being measured on. These changes include:
  • The pH of the concrete using modifiers
  • Different aggregates/size fractions
  • Different chemical compositions
  • Different additives to set the concrete faster
  • Steel coatings to protect it from corrosion
  • Corrosion protection using active and passive protection
There are many dynamics occurring between the concrete, the reinforcing mesh and the environment. For concrete to last all the components have to come together and work together
  • Concrete needs to have:
    • The right chemistry to protect the reinforcing mesh
    • Few cracks to prevent moisture ingress
    • The right granularity to provide the right strength/grade
  • Concrete installation practices need:
    • Sufficient cover
    • Good mixing
    • Good compaction & laying
    • Curing regime
  • The Environment needs to be:
    • Free from contamination that impacts the pH
    • Dry to prevent the migration of ions in ground water
    • The temperature during curing needs to be right
If one of the above factors was to fall outside the desired range then the life of the concrete will be reduced.
Concrete Cancer is the term used to describe the failure of the concrete as the reinforcing steel corrodes. The mechanism is:
  • Concrete due to its porosity absorbs moisture and gases
  • Moisture and gases accumulate and move through the concrete
  • The moisture and gases change the chemistry of the concrete
  • The concrete chemistry (pH) changes and the steel is unprotected from corrosion
  • The moisture and gases reach the steel and corrosion starts
  • Steel is converted to its oxide (rust)
  • The steel oxide takes up more volume than the steel and this causes internal compressive forces
  • Concrete begins to crack due to the compressive forces of the corroding steel inside
  • Concrete spalls and falls away exposing even more concrete and steel
  • Concrete and steel increase the failure mechanism and corrosion accelerates
This is considered the “vicious circle of corrosion”
Concrete is a material that has been selected to provide strength at a cost. The following are some of the downsides of concrete:
  • Porous and allows moisture into the structure and this moisture can carry chloride ions
  • Contains lime and the lime absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere (Carbonation)
  • Formulation is important to provide its properties but relies on people to make it to the specific formulae
  • Performance is a function of the curing conditions
The properties of Stainless Steel are significantly superior when it comes to corrosion protection over mild steel these include:
  • Better corrosion resistance to different environments
  • No need to provide protective coatings as Stainless Steel has a natural protective coating that self-repairs
  • Don’t need chemical additives in the concrete to prevent corrosion
The following are some reasons why you would use Stainless Steel as your reinforcing Mesh
  • If you are looking for long asset life with low maintenance costs
  • If you can’t afford for your concrete to fail (safety critical infrastructure) or it is too costly to maintain (Offshore windfarms)
  • If the area is polluted and you can remove this from the soil (Tunnelling projects)
  • If you are wanting to use less concrete
