Woven Mesh Calculations

  • Mesh Count
  • Wire Diam mm
  • Aperture mm
  • Open Area %
  • Weight Squ m
  • Micron (if Aperture =< 1)
There are several different apertures that are available with different wire diameters from SSWM. These all offer something different depending on your application. Bird Proofing will also keep out other animals like possums and other animals that can do damage to your building.
In many locations across Australia, getting ventilation into the building is critical to its use. In some locations, the design of the building is based on allowing cross airflow. This makes the space more inhabitable. Closing in these buildings would make them more expensive to construct and operate and so having a Bird Proofing that allows air flow is critical. Bird Proofing can range from 80% open area allowing excellent airflow and natural lighting.
We are seeing more and more people wanting to protect the areas in and around their solar panels. Having bird proof mesh stops birds getting under the panels.  If birds are not nesting there then they are more unlikely to roost around the panels and not dirtying the panels which would reduce the panels efficiency. This means that panels don’t require regular cleaning.
We find buildings that are in open spaces which are designed to cover critical infrastructure most commonly request Bird Proof Mesh. Buildings like aircraft hangers, fire departments, warehouses and schools are continuous users for several different reasons.  The benefits are the improved housekeeping and the reduction in the maintenance requirement to clean any messes (nesting & droppings). This then reduces the exposure to any diseases that birds could be carrying.
The Bird Proof Mesh can be installed using typical “handy person” tools. It is typically installed between the roof line and the wall where birds can find a flat space. There are several different widths of Bird Proof Mesh available that can help with easy installation. The range includes the following widths: 19.5 cm, 91.5 cm, 122.0 cm & 152.5 cm some of which come in a Black UV Stabilised PVC coating.
There are many factors that decide this such as the materials of construction, the exposure to the elements and the interaction with the animals. Nylon netting typically has a warranty period of 5 years while Stainless Steel Mesh has a 10 year warranty.
Fixed or rigid bird proof mesh will not harm animals unlike flexible mesh. The flexible nylon mesh can catch the animal and creates greater distress to the animal and in some cases needs to be released from the netting. Stainless steel mesh is rigid and will not catch the animal meaning it will not harm birds and small creatures.
It is placed on those flat surfaces where birds typically roost and nest. These locations are typically in difficult to reach locations that provide a level of protection. Stainless Steel Mesh works really well in these locations as they can hold their shape and have an excellent lifetime.
There are many kinds of Mesh used in the industry today and you have a large number of choices including:
  • Stainless steel mesh vs nylon netting
  • Coated and uncoated netting
  • Square, diamond and hexagonal profiles
  • Rigid and flexible
  • Combustible and non-combustible
  • Tensile strength (wire diameters)
We like to think that using Stainless Steel Welded Mesh Bird Proofing is the best product on the market. With its strength, corrosion resistance and rigid structure it delivers on all the requirements our customers are looking for.
Any building that you are wanting to protect assets and people within the building. Our Bird Proof Mesh finds it’s way into both commercial & residential buildings. It is also used to keep birds out from under solar panels & building eves. Keeping birds out will protect the asset as well as stopping the spread of potential diseases.
Unfortunately, No. There is an entire industry built around ventilation system installation, this falls under the heading of HVAC or Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. The industry is very mature and is full of excellent advisers. We recommend that you engage a HVAC professional for your Ventilation System requirements.
They should be considering the material of construction. SSWM louvre Mesh is made from Stainless steel meaning it is corrosion resistant. Ventilation systems intake is often moving moist air and the moisture can then form droplets on the louvre mesh. Stainless steel louvre mesh comes in two grades:
  • Grade – 304 for inland locations where the probability of salt spray is low
  • Grade – 316 for coastal locations where the probability of salt spray is high
Selecting the right grade of material will ensure you have a maintenance free solution for the life of your project
As discussed, the significance of pressure drop becomes important as the mesh becomes smaller. These smaller mesh’s can be categorised as “Insect Screens”. SSWM utilises pressure drop curves from university studies at different air flow rates to support ventilation system designers in order to select the right Louvre mesh for their application. Understanding these pressure drops will help the designer size the right fan for the application that will deliver the required air movement.
Louvre mesh is a component in the system and the pressure drop over the louvre mesh must be considered. The following should be considered when selecting the Louvre mesh for your application:
  1. Open Area (Free Area)
  2. Wire Diameter
  3. Aperture
As the above louvre mesh gets smaller, the pressure drop across the mesh will tend to increase.
This can be quite significant. It is important to understand the intention of the louver mesh to be able to size the mesh currently and then determine the pressure drop of the mesh and the impact on the mechanical ventilation system. The pressure across a ventilation system is a function of many factors such as:
  • The Volume of Air required (m3)
  • The area of the ducting the air travels through (m2)
  • The temperature, humidity, density and the viscosity of the air
  • The number of bends, elbows, branches and dampeners
  • The distances the air is being moved
  • The filtration system used to clean the air
The external environment should always be considered. In most cases Australian standards, are silent on suitability for a material in a particular environment.  There are several considerations here:
  • Is the area in a bushfire prone area and should an ember mesh be used?
  • What are the typical birds in the area and should the louver mesh be used to keep these out?
  • Are insects a problem in the area?
The building ventilation system is a combination of fans, filters, ducting, bends, elbows, branches and dampeners. The ventilation system is designed to deliver the right amount of air flow at the right location throughout the building. When the engineers design the system they need to know what the pressure drops are over the system to determine the correct fan sizing. Louvre mesh pressure drop needs to be included in these calculations to ensure the system will deliver the required outcomes.
There are typically two types, mechanical and natural. These are covered by the Australian Standard AS 1668 series of Standards. Mechanical ventilation requirements are covered in AS 1668.2 while natural ventilation requirements are covered in AS 1668.4
All sorts of foreign objects. The mesh is used to catch any materials that are drawn into the Ventilation system that could block or restrict the airflow. This could include items like carboard, plastic as well as birds and some insects.
This is a mesh that typically sits behind Louvres in commercial building ventilation systems. The louvres provide a level of visual screening and weather protection that allows air to pass into or out of the building in a controlled manner.  The mesh sits behind the louvre where it is protected from mechanical damage and acts as a first pass filter.
