Common Applications

Well-suited for environments requiring strength, safety and corrosion resistance, including:

  • Modern architectural settings
  • Coastal or high salt exposure areas
  • Rural settings, black welded mesh also known as aviary mesh

SSWM Stocked Pool Mesh Range

Your application will determine the most appropriate mesh for your project:

  • Stainless Steel Woven Mesh
Is ideal for environments that require strength, corrosion resistance, precision patterning and long‑term durability.
  • Stainless Steel Black Welded Mesh
Is highly valued for its discreet appearance, making it ideal for installations where the mesh must perform structurally without visually dominating the landscape. As the black coating absorbs light and disappears into background. Also referred to as aviary mesh for pool fencing.

Stainless steel woven pool mesh is available in sheets (2m x 1245mm and 2.4m x 1245mm) and 30m rolls. Black welded mesh is available in 2.4m x 1200mm sheets and 30m rolls, depending on specification.

Pool mesh must be installed in accordance with local pool safety regulations. The 9.5mm aperture option is commonly specified to prevent climbing and ensure compliance with barrier requirements.

Yes. Grade 316 stainless steel woven mesh is recommended for coastal or high-salt environments due to its superior resistance to chloride exposure and corrosion.

Stainless steel woven pool mesh provides structural strength, precision aperture and long-term corrosion resistance. Black welded mesh offers a discreet appearance, blending into landscaped environments while maintaining structural integrity for pool fencing.

Stainless steel pool mesh is used for pool fencing and barrier systems where strength, corrosion resistance and long-term durability are required. It is particularly suited to coastal and high-exposure environments.

Yes, Australian standards have developed a standard called AS 1926.1 Swimming Pool Safety Part 1: Safety barriers for swimming pools. This standard was developed by several stakeholders including the Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Victoria, NSW & Western Australia.
Each State and Territory has their own building regulations, these regulations reference the relevant Australian Standard. There is a requirement for the owners of the land that have a pool and or spa to register this with their City Council. The landowner is required to have the pool and or spa regularly inspected due to the risks associated with unfenced pools & spas or poorly fenced pools & spas. The landowner is required to submit a certification of compliance regarding the pool & spa safety barriers to the council. The certificate of compliance is completed by an independent and approved inspection party.
The Pool & Spa Association of Australia www.spasa.com.au is an excellent resource to understand the requirements. It has information on the requirements in each state and there is some useful information under their FAQ tab on their website. The site provides useful information on the Australian Standards as well as any other State Government requirements.
SSWM can supply Stainless Steel Mesh that meets the dimensions of the Mesh within the Australian Standards. Your builder will need to construct the frame to be compliant with AS 1926.1 that will support the mesh. Our compliant products come in the following form:
Some of our compliant products are available in Black Powder Coat and the others are available in raw stainless steel also known as mill finish. The mill finish can be powder coated by a third party to give you the look that you are looking for. If you are looking to bring out the lustre of the Stainless Steel then you can have the surface treated to make it super smooth which will give you a mirror type finish.
Pools and spas can be either salt water or chlorinated and in both cases, they contain Chlorine. It is expected that with a pool and or spa with use water will be splashed and this is expected to land on the safety barrier. Grade 316 stainless steel offers better corrosion resistance to chlorine than grade 304. However, where the stainless steel surface is protected (PVC) or the surface has been treated then Grade 304 could be considered.
Stainless Steel maintenance is very simple. Giving it a good wash every few months will wash away any material that builds up on the surface. Surface “grime” can cause a problem called “Tea Staining” which is localised decolourisation on the surface of the stainless steel. This can occur when the grime starts to breakdown on the stainless-steel surface. The reason you see it, is because the stainless-steel mill finish is quite reflective, and it shows up. Washing the surface regularly will wash away this grime.
The requirements for Safety Barriers are specified in section 2.3 under the Fencing heading. Section 2.3.4 perforated material or mesh defines the barrier specification. It states the following: 2.3.2 Perforated material or mesh Fencing using perforated materials or mesh with apertures not greater than 13 mm shall have an effective fencing height not less than 1200 mm. Fencing using perforated material or mesh with apertures greater than 13 mm but not greater than 100 mm shall have an effective fencing height of not less than 1800 mm. Perforated material with apertures greater than 100 mm shall not be used. Fencing using mesh shall include a strainer wire or rail at the top and the bottom of the fencing.
There are two critical stakeholders that you need to engage early with:
  1. Your Pool Safety Barrier Inspector – While the Australian Standard is easy to follow, it can often be interpreted differently by different inspectors. We have found that different inspectors in different states will often look for different things. Make sure you know what they are looking for
  2. You Pool Safety Barrier Installer – This group will need to be familiar with the Australian Standard as well as being competent builders. The safety barrier has a performance requirement, and the builder needs to know these so they can build a compliant safety barrier (AS 1926.1 Section 3 loading requirements).
We supply 10cm by 10cm samples so you can see and feel the mesh product and how it will blend into your pool environment. We supply the following products that comply with the mesh aperture requirements from the Australian Standard:
  1. 9.5mm x 9.5mm welded mesh with 1mm wire that is 1220mm wide in 30 meter rolls
  2. 12.7mm x 12.7 mm welded mesh with 1mm wire that is 1220mm wide in 30 meter rolls
These two products come in Grade 304 with UV stabilised black PVC and mill finish Grade 316. You can also share this with your builder and inspector to make sure they are happy with the product.
We have a datasheet for each product item, these include a to-scale image, specifications, dimensions and weights. These are found on the website in the far right column of the product tables. We also include a link to the relevant datasheet in all quotes, proformas and invoices.
