Bright Annealed Tracer Wire

Stainless Steel Tracer Wire with a diameter of 2.00mm is also known as locating wire. Tracer wire is installed with underground infrastructure including cables or pipes to enable it to be traced or located in the future. Tracer wire is detectable and protects your underground infrastructure and can allow you to meet your compliance obligations and ensure safety and maintenance of underground infrastructure.

Common Applications

  • Utility Locating: Used to locate underground utilities such as gas, water and sewer lines.
  • Telecommunications: Helps in locating buried communication cables.
  • Electrical Infrastructure: Used for locating underground electrical cables.
  • Pipeline Locating: Essential for identifying the location of buried pipelines in oil and gas industries.
  • Construction Projects: Ensures that buried infrastructure can be easily located during construction activities.
  • Municipal Infrastructure: Used by municipalities to locate and maintain underground infrastructure.
  • Directional Drilling: Used in civil and construction applications.

Tracer Wire is a cold drawn, bright annealed stainless steel wire used alongside underground pipelines. Tracer Wire enables the detection of buried infrastructure and pipelines by carrying a low-frequency radio signal from a connected transmitter. This signal can be picked up by a receiver, allowing technicians to trace the wire and pinpoint the location of the underground pipeline without excavation.
Stainless steel offers long term corrosion resistance without the need for sacrificial anodes, which are required for non stainless materials. Using stainless steel eliminates the need for ongoing monitoring and replacement of anodes, making it a more reliable and less maintenance is required.
Bright annealed (BA) refers to a surface finish achieved during heat treatment in a controlled atmosphere. It results in a smooth, matte appearance. This finish is ideal for buried applications like tracer wire, where surface aesthetics are less critical but corrosion resistance is essential.
The tensile strength of stainless steel wire can be increased through a process called cold working, which involves drawing the wire to reduce its diameter. This strengthens the wire, with tensile strengths up to 1500 MPa achievable. However, excessive cold working can make the wire brittle and prone to breaking.
Grade 316 stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion in neutral pH soils. However, in highly acidic (depends on the type of acid) or contaminated environments, there is a risk that the wire may suffer from some form of pitting corrosion. Soil testing is recommended in areas with known contamination.
Tracer wire is typically connected to grounding rods or terminals. These connections allow a signal transmitter to energise the wire, similar to how an electric fence on a farm operates. The signal travels along the wire and seeks the shortest path to earth (to complete the circuit), enabling accurate detection of the pipeline’s path.
Almost all underground pipelines should be using Tracer wire. Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) call for pipelines like pressure sewage to install tracer wire.
Tracer wire doesn’t physically protect pipelines but is an active barrier and plays a crucial role in preventing accidental damage. When excavation is planned, the wire can be energized with a low-frequency signal. A detector can then trace the signal to accurately locate the pipeline, reducing the risk of unintentional strikes during digging.
As tracer wire is buried underground, it must be corrosion resistant and electrically conductive to function. The industry standard is Grade 316 stainless steel, known for its excellent corrosion resistance in soils where low levels of chlorides may be present. While Tensile Strength is not specified for Tracer wire, the ASTM 550 Standard for Wire is 620MPa.  Additionally, stainless steel’s natural electrical conductivity allows it to carry the low-frequency signal used for pipeline detection.
