Chainlink Fencing

Airports in remote, coastal Australia face some of the harshest environmental conditions, where infrastructure must withstand constant exposure to salt, humidity and heat. This project set out to deliver a perimeter fencing solution that would ensure long-term security, minimal maintenance and compliance with strict Federal Government requirements.

PROJECT DETAILS

Site Location: Far North, Queensland
Product Used: Chainlink Fencing
Client:
Arnel Fencing

PROJECT SCOPE

The goal was to provide a durable product suitable for a hot and humid coastal location classified as a CX corrosion zone, as per Australian Standard 4312. The product needed to require minimal inspection and maintenance while offering an asset life of 50 years. Given that the airport is often unmanned, the condition of the perimeter fence is frequently unknown. The Airport Authority, under the Local Council, sought a material that would ensure the perimeter fence remained intact 24/7 and met Federal Government requirements for airport security.

THE PROBLEM

Traditional galvanised chainlink fencing had been used in the past for perimeter fencing. However, the project demanded a more robust solution to avoid frequent replacements and unrealistic maintenance programs due to high labour costs, especially in remote areas.

THE SSWM SOLUTION

Stainless Steel Chainlink Fencing was the ideal solution due to its long asset life and minimal maintenance requirements. This gave the Airport Authority confidence that the fencing would last, reducing the need for frequent inspections. They could be assured that animals would not breach the perimeter fence due to rust, thus ensuring the safety of planes. Although the new fencing material was more expensive, its asset life increased by up to 10 times, resulting in lower total costs.
