Stainless Woven Mesh Terminology

Mesh – The number of openings per lineal inch.

SWG – Standard wire gauge

Aperture- The distance between two adjacent wires

Diameter- The thickness of the wire before weaving

Pitch- The distance between the middle point of two adjacent wires or the sum of the aperture width and the wire diameter.

% Open Area- The ratio of the area of the aperture to the area of the mesh expressed in percentage terms

Weft- All wires running across the cloth as woven

Weave

Plain Weave

The most common and simplest weaves. Each warp wire (wire running parallel to the length of the cloth) passes alternatively over and under the wires running transversely through the cloth at 90 degree angles.

Intercrimp Weave

Has extra crimps in warp and weft wires between intersections.

Lock Crimp Weave

Is produced with pre-crimped wire. Lock crimp weave is stabilised by a notch or bump at the wire intersections.

 Twill Weave

twill-weave

Is Produced by passing each fill wire alternatively over and under two warp wires.

Stainless Woven Mesh Formulas

Aperture

Calculating the aperture

  1. Count of a convenient number of apertures (N)
  2. Measure the length covered by the N apertures (L)
  3. Measure the wire diameter (D)
  4. The average aperture (A)

calculating-woven-wire-mesh-aperture

Working example of calculating the aperture of 6/20 woven wire mesh

  1. Number of apertures counted N = 6
  2. Length covered by apertures centre to centre L = 25.4mm
  3. Diameter of wire D = 0.9mm
  4. Aperture

calculating-aperture

The woven wire is identified as 3.33mm aperture / 0.9mm diameter

Mesh Count
calculating-mesh-count-1

Percentage Open Area
calculating-open-area

The mesh has a 62% open area

Micron Conversion

Micron (micrometer) is a unit of measure, in which usually only fine mesh under 1mm is referred to. A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre.

In this example 325/48.5, 0.043mm aperture, 0.035mm diameter is used.

Woven Mesh Calculations

  • Mesh Count
  • Wire Diam mm
  • Aperture mm
  • Open Area %
  • Weight Squ m
  • Micron (if Aperture =< 1)
Because Stainless Steel Woven Mesh is woven, it can be easily rolled and wrapped. In most cases it can be sent via a courier when the weight is under 32Kgs and the width is less than 900mm.
We carry over 380 different sizes of Woven Mesh and supply across Australia.
We can supply a mesh with a wire diameter of 0.025mm and an aperture of 0.026mm. As a comparison, a human hair can be as small as 0.016mm so our mesh is small. This mesh is often used in Scientific labs at universities and research centres where they are developing new process. Because this mesh is so fine it takes hours for the weaving machine to make this material. This mesh has 500 openings per inch, uses a 50 SWG wire and has an open area of 26%.
Stainless Steel Woven Mesh strength is a function of the following:
    1. The Tensile strength of the Stainless Steel
    2. The Wire Diameter
    3. The Type of Weave
    4. The Number of wires
Woven Mesh can be attached to other equipment via several different methods:
    1. Welded to other steels
    2. Clamped to other materials
Micron is a measurement of the Aperture. A micron is 1/1000 of a millimetre so a mesh that is 100 micron has an aperture of 0.1mm. It is difficult to then compare Microns and mesh counts because different woven meshes have different wire diameters.
No. There are many different types of Woven Mesh. These can vary according to the following:
  • Different Wire Diameters for Warp and Weft Wire (Hollander Mesh)
  • Different Weave patters  (Dutch, Reverse Dutch etc)
  • Different Mechanisms to hold the Wires in place (Crimping)
These are the terms that were historically used to describe Woven Mesh. They are:
    1. Mesh Count is the number of holes in the mesh per inch mesh
    2. SWG is the Standard Wire Gauge that was used to describe the diameter of the wire
At SSWM we can take your Mesh count and SWG and we can supply you a mesh that meets your specification
Stainless Steel Woven Mesh has the following critical dimension:
    1. Wire Diameter –This is measured in millimetres (mm) or Standard Wire Guage (SWG)
    2. Aperture – This is the gap between the wires that allow the material to pass through
    3. Mesh Count – this is typically the number of openings per inch for mesh that doesn’t have a square opening then both dimensions need to be specified
    4. Open Area – This the percentage of space of the mesh that is used to consider the pressure drop across the mesh
    5. Weave – This is how the wire is combined to make the mesh including Plain, Twill, Dutch
    6. Crimp – This is additional process that is used to lock the wires together including Intermediate and Locking.
    7. Width – This is the width that the woven mesh is manufactured in
    8. Edge Finish – this is how the Width Wires are presented and can be Raw, Tucked and Selvage (Looped) edge
    9. Grade – This is the grade of Stainless Steel that is being used to make the Woven Mesh (304 and 316)
Yes it is. Its is manufactured on a similar type of machine as cotton cloth. The Stainless Steel wire is woven into a mesh using two wires. The wires run in two directions:
    1. The lengthwise wires are called the Warp Wire
    2. The width wise wires are called the Weft Wire
Stainless Steel has some excellent Mechanical and Chemical properties:
    Mechanical Properties:
    • Tensile properties mean it is able to operate in mechanical harsh environments and can withstand greater impact forces than Carbon Steels
    • Hardness properties mean it will not easily be effected by erosion by material contact
    Chemical Properties:
    • Corrosion resistance means it will not corrode under many conditions. The Food & Beverage industry requires high standards and no contamination and stainless steel is able to provide these
    • Stable at low and high temperature meaning it will not breakdown into its components
    • Is easy to clean and can be “sterilised” easily if required
Woven Mesh has more flexibility than welded mesh and are often used in application that are dynamic. The Woven Mesh can hold its shape during vibration and impact meaning it has a long performance life with limited maintenance. In some cases Mesh can be altered to improve its ability to hold its shape. This includes “crimping” a wire to provide additional strength to the Mesh.
Mesh is most commonly used as a filter medium. The mesh is used to separate material that is over sized while allowing the material that is undersized to pass through. Different processes require different sizes of material and screening these materials improves the quality of this material.
