Project: Kwinana Waster Centre to Energy
SSWM Case Study
Our Stainless Steel Roof Safety Mesh – PVC Coated, has been successfully installed in the Kwinana Waste to Energy Project. It was a challenging project with a coastal location which brings corrosion issues but also the industrial facility faces challenges of chemical exposure and galvanic reaction between the dissimilar metals.

The problem: was that traditional steel products are not inherently corrosion resistant. The project demanded a robust solution to combat corrosion and galvanic reactions.

The SSWM solution: Stainless Steel PVC Coated Roof Safety Mesh was the solution, to combat corrosion and galvanic reactions. The benefit of stainless steel PVC Coated over galvanised is that when the PVC coating on galvanised is damaged or cracked the galvanised wire will corrode below the surface of the PVC. Whereas stainless steel is inherently corrosion resistant and will not rust.

The most important thing to ask is: “Can I have a copy of the testing certificate?” This will ensure that the supplier is meeting the Australian Standards and that you are being provided with a product that complies. The next most important thing is the supplier asks you: “what is the environment you are using this in?” This will give you the confidence that the supplier knows his product and wants to make sure you receive the right product for your environment.
The Australian Standards (section 9.3, 9.4) have excellent guidelines on how to install Roof Safety Mesh.  These are supported by state by state Work Safe guidelines on best practice guides. PVC can act in two ways:
  • Act as a protective layer to prevent corrosion. This can be used to protect the steel wire from both the external and internal environments
  • Act as an insulator to prevent Galvanic Corrosion (Dissimilar metals). This may be important in cases where the difference in metals may lead to corrosion of the protective coating.
The Australian Standards allows for different materials to be used to form the Roof Safety Mesh. The two common materials that deliver the strength requirements are:
  • Galvanised Wire used to form a Galvanised Mesh
  • Stainless Steel wire to form a Stainless-Steel Mesh
The materials are welded together to form a Welded Roof Safety Mesh in line with AS/NZS 4389:2015 section 7.1.2 Mesh
Different materials corrode at different rates. By changing the physical environment, you can accelerate the corrosion. Designers and builders need to understand the following points to ensure they deliver the scope of works:
  • The material properties and corrosion rate
  • The category (location) that the material is being placed in service
  • The service life of the asset.
The above three considerations will then ensure the materials that are selected for the application will be “fit for purpose”. Australian Standards acknowledge that durability (section 10) is an issue when it comes to steel wires. The Standard states that no wire should be used if it shows signs of rust.
Materials that are used as Safety Barriers should be reliable and deliver the required performance over time. The location where the materials are installed can have a significant effect on the performance of the material. Selecting the appropriate material requires taking into account both the environment and the service life of the material. The corrosion rates across Australia vary significantly according to AS 4312 and is a function of the proximity to salt water.
The Australian Standards provide material (section 4) and general requirements (section 6) for Roof Safety Mesh. The standard highlights the requirements of corrosion exposure conditions (Section 6.2) that shall be taken into account when determining the material and coatings. The Standard highlights that consideration should be given to the environment in which the material is being used. SSWM references AS 4312 Atmospheric Corrosivity Zones in Australia to determine the external Corrosion Environments.
Both Standards require a Barrier to be installed over areas where there is a potential for either construction activities or normal activities can result in a fall. The requirements are the Roof Safety Mesh can prevent a person from falling to the ground and that the product must be tested according to a “Drop Test”. (AS 4389 Appendix A5)
