Welded Mesh terminology

Mesh – The distance between two adjacent parallel wires, measured from centre to centre of the wires.

Diameter – Thickness of the wire before processing.

Welded Mesh Vs Woven Mesh

Welded wire mesh typically has larger openings than woven wire mesh. The wires are welded at each intersection giving the mesh strength and the capability of maintaining its integrity under stress. The popularity of welded mesh is increasing as it can be cut and formed with relative ease.

Custom made welded wire mesh panels

For a requirement larger than our stocked panels (2400 x 1200mm), custom made panels can be manufactured with a length up to 3000mm and width up to 2400mm. For further information on our stocked welded mesh panels refer to the product specifications tab

If you require your panels to be fabricated, we can recommend a fabricator to suit your application.

All our welded panels have edges trimmed (flush).

Welded Mesh Calculations

  • Mesh mm
  • Diam mm
  • Open Area %
  • Weight Squ m
Welded Mesh uses an automatic resistance spot welding machine to apply downward pressure on the wires and then uses a current to generate sufficient heat to create a weld. Unlike other welding techniques, there is no flux material added to the weld making it more environmentally friendly. The Wires used for making welded mesh are cold drawn and are often referred to as “Mill” or “Raw” finish.  The wires are not “mirror” finish, but the welded mesh can be treated to improve the smoothness of the mesh which will improve the finish.
It is welded because this is what the application has asked for. Welded panels are produced due to the strength provided by the weld (weld strength). This can be increased or decreased based on the following:
  • Downward pressure on the wires
  • Duration of the weld
  • Power input into the weld
There are some standards that require a minimum weld strength including:
  • Gabions require a 70% weld shear strength
  • Reinforced concrete mesh requires a 50% weld shear strength
This means the strength is based on a % of the strength of the wire. The welding settings are taken from the tensile strength of the wire, these are determined from the Mill Certificates.
Welded mesh dimensions are measured from the Centre of the wire to the centre of the wire. Mesh is named when you refer to it by the dimensions of the aperture in mm across both the “X” axis and “Y” axis and the diameter of the wire in mm. For example, a welded wire mesh is often referred to as 25mm x 25mm x 3mm.
The Welded Mesh hardly uses aperture or open Area when being specified. The Welded Mesh is often being placed in a frame and so the dimensions of the welded mesh are more important than the dimensions of the aperture and open area. Woven mesh users are more interested in aperture as they are often using the material to screen or filter a product or material.
There is a physical restriction created by the transformers on the welding heads on the automatic welding machine. These heads require some space around the welding points and this limits the aperture. Currently our minimum aperture for welded wire is 6.35 mm centre to centre with a 0.63mm wire.
There is no one common application for welded mesh. The benefit of Welded Mesh is it’s a strong barrier. It can be used in a variety of environments such as:
  • Gabions – hold rock and stone to from a barrier that allows moisture to pass through the structure
  • Pool Fencing – prevents people from passing through the barrier
  • Bird & Rodent fencing – stop access to animals and spread of diseases into critical areas
  • Roof Safety Mesh – that is installed to prevent falls during building construction and through roofing products as they age
  • Insulation support – secures insulation material around Boilers and Furnaces
  • Reinforcing mesh – for concrete applications where strength and long asset life is required.
These activities can be considered as static barriers.
Typically, these applications involve a dynamic situation where products and materials are moving. In some cases, the application to improve the efficiency has the medium being “shaken” to avoid blockages. Welded wire in this application may not be the best solution as the dynamic forces may cause the welds to break. In these situations, Woven wire screens are more suitable as they are able to handle the dynamic nature of the process. SSWM also provides a wide range of woven wire applications that can meet the demands of the mining, screening, and filtration industries.
Stainless Steel has some inherent properties for hardness, strength, ductility & elongation. When wire is drawn via cold working this increases the strength of the wire. SSWM is able to specify the wire strength used in its welded mesh to meet the mechanical requirements of the material application. We are also able to specify the weld strength of the mesh to meet the application requirements. Welded mesh’s strength and ductility properties are the most critical in the concrete reinforcing mesh industry. This industry is looking for the following products:
  • Tensile Strength (MPa): 250, 300, 500, 600 & 750
  • Ductility:  Low (L), Normal (N) & Earthquake (E)
Stainless Steel Welded Mesh properties can meet the tensile strength up to 500 MPa and ductility of earthquake (E) Because of its superior corrosion resistant properties, it is best suited in maritime and coastal applications or where saline conditions exist (hard water applications).
Essentially the difference is how the two products are handled. Both products are manufactured in the same manner using an automated welding machine that employs resistance spot welding with the specified grade of stainless steel. The big difference is the wire diameter. As the wire diameter increases it is harder to roll the welded wire mesh and harder to unwind the mesh and hold its shape without any distortion. Welded wire mesh rolls can be made in 30-meter lengths in a variety of different widths with the most common being 915mm, 1220mm and 1550mm these are all easily transported. The wire diameter is between 0.63mm to 2.0mm and the mesh dimensions range from 6.35mm to 50.8mm. Welded wire mesh panels are made in 2400 mm x 1200mm dimensions with a wire diameter ranging from 2.5mm to 8.0mm. Because the wire diameter is large, it is difficult to be able to roll the product and so these products are available in flat panels.
SSWM offer several products that are coated with PVC. There are some applications where coating a 304 grade Stainless Steel with PVC will provide protection against pollutants in the environmental and where dissimilar metals are involved.
Stainless steel welded panels can also be treated to improve the finish. The welded panels are made from cold drawn wire that have a mill or raw finish and consistent with the industry association standard for wire finishes (ASSDA reference manual 2020 table 41). If the material is being used as a feature in a building or public space, then treating the welded wire mesh will give it a great finish that will make it easier to clean. There are several treatments that can be used to improve the finish on the welded wire mesh including both chemical and mechanical. There are several businesses within each state that provide these services. At SSWM we suggest that you use a business that has been listed by ASSDA the industry association. Member Search
