Why is Stainless Steel Mesh the safest Mesh for my Bird Aviary?

Birds are incredible creatures; they embody grace, beauty, and colour. Birds offer so much and are an integral part of our our natural systems and so too is the ecological value that they bring. Therefore, we must have successful management, conservation and rehabilitation of birds.

The housing of birds is crucial and a well designed and built aviary must enable birds to have free movement and flight. Birds need to feel safe and secure in their environment before they will breed.

Many Zoos have incredible aviaries that support the conservation and rehabilitation of birds. Zoos such as Australia Zoo in Queensland, mission is to provide education and global conservation to give endangered species a chance to survive and thrive. To protect animals such as birds, comfortable bird aviaries must be constructed to give birds the best care.

SSWM is also a proud corporate member of the Zoo Aquarium Association Australia, whose mission is to lead Australian zoos and aquariums to work together to save wildlife.

Australian’s share a love for birds especially in Queensland it is a state known for its beautiful tropical birds, such as parrots and lorikeets. Many Queenslanders have incredible home aviaries for their birds such as incredible macaws. Queensland even has its own ornithological society, Birds Queensland – created to promote the welfare and study of birds. Queensland not only experiences extreme heat and sun exposure, but it also has a tropical climate which exposes bird aviaries to a variety of wet, windy, and humid conditions. When designing your bird aviary, the ability to withstand these conditions is a major consideration in the design and specification.

What to consider when building your aviary:

  • Mesh: depending on what birds you are housing, will determine what welded mesh you select.
  • Aviary Size: based on the type of bird, and the number of birds that will reside in the aviary, allowing enough room for birds to fly around comfortably.
  • Shade: it is important for the birds to have ample shade, especially during hot summer days.
  • Safety: the materials chosen for the construction need to be safe for birds. This means free from zinc and other harmful chemicals.
  • Longevity: the materials need to withstand harsh environments and last.

Why is stainless steel safer than galvanised mesh?
Bird aviaries are commonly constructed with welded mesh. Galvanised mesh, whilst a cheaper option, can come at a major cost to the birds, as it can cause zinc poisoning when birds chew on the mesh. It is not only a dangerous choice for the birds, but it does also not withstand harsh environments like stainless steel does. Heavy metal toxicosis also known as new wire disease is a common form of zinc poisoning in birds.
